CUMBERLAND — The Cumberland Economic Development Corp. and the Downtown Development Commission recently released a joint announcement on the hiring of a Frederick-based firm to create new design plans for the downtown mall.
Cochran Studios, Inc. has been hired to prepare a streetscape design and public art plan for the Baltimore Street Redevelopment Project.
According to the news release, the project involves the introduction of a single lane of vehicular and bicycle traffic along the current pedestrian mall. The reintroduced Baltimore Street will run from Mechanic to George streets.
The plan also calls for the replacement of underground utilities and the installation of fiber optic cable at the site.
“The city, its development team and community partners are committed to improving the economic condition of the city of Cumberland. The Baltimore Street Redevelopment Project is a crucial component of the city’s revitalization efforts, and we are extremely fortunate to add Cochran’s wealth of experience and talent to the development team,” Paul Kelly, CEDC executive director, said.
Cochran Studios has completed design work for the Hagerstown Cultural Trail, the Pillar of Fire in Washington and the Community Bridge along Carroll Creek in Frederick.
The plan to renovate the downtown pedestrian mall is expected to cost $5 million to $7.4 million. A timeline for the project is currently not in place. Officials have secured less than half of the required funds, and Kelly said plans are in place to pursue additional funding.
